New Kids Club Locations to Start April 15th

A new round of CCTA Kids’ Clubs will begin on the week of April 15th. We have some new locations this time so be sure to note the times and locations. One will be held at the Gregory-Portland Intermediate School Courts on Sundays from 2 PM to 3PM for 6 weeks. The second will be at the Tuloso-Midway High School Courts from 5:30-6:30 PM on Tuesday evenings. Cost for either club is $35 and children who need a new junior racquet will be provided one. These Kids Clubs are great beginnings for youngsters who are interested in learning tennis. Centered around beginning skills and fun activities, we use the 10 and Under Progressions to introduce the game to the kids. While it is technically a 10 and Under program, we do accept kids up to 12 if they have not played before. So sign your kids up online here and just bring a check or cash to the first session. Buc Days Tournament Results

Buc Days Adult Major Zone was a great success and as usual we had great representation from Corpus Christi! The CCTA would like to thank all of the local and out of town players who participated this year. We had perfect weather and an excellent turnout. We would also like to recognize and thank all of our volunteers who ran sites or helped at sites, including Ron Woods, Gerry Maingot, Christine Cone, Ida Brazell, Jim Avery, Alex Maingot, and Katy Rogers; our referees and umpires, Billy Fuls, Ralph Martin, Norma Wilke, Scott Anderson, Jeff Riddle, Courtney Burch, James Moses and Terry Sweet; and of course, our tournament director, Penny Maingot. Also, our thanks to the sites and their staffs who are so patient with our extended hours and needs-HEB Tennis Center, Al Kruse Tennis Center and Corpus Christi Country Club.

Brick Paver Fundraiser Restarted

As many of you know, several years ago, the CCTA began a fundraiser selling brick pavers to be on display at HEB Tennis Center. These pavers are a great way to honor families, parents, coaches–anyone who has been instrumental in your tennis life. They come in several different sizes and donation amounts. March Into Tennis Events Start

In conjunction with the USTA March Into Tennis initiative, there will be several events offered around the city for youngsters. On March 30th, from 6:30 pm until 8 pm, the Corpus Christi Athletic Club 2101 Airline and Holly will host a PlayDay. The cost there is $5 also. Also, call their pro shop at 361-992-7100 to sign up.

Islanders to Host Youth Registration Event March 31st

The Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders will help host a Youth Registration Event with the CCTA on March 31st at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Complex, from 12 PM until 3 PM. Part of the USTA March Into Tennis, this event will showcase the Islander tennis teams. The women Islanders will be playing Texas State University and the Islander men will be on hand supporting the women’s team and our event. Bring the kids out to support our Islanders, enjoy some great kids’ activities, and learn about all of the great tennis activities available in the area! See you there!

Buc Days Adult Major Zone Starts Friday

The Buc Days Adult Major Zone tournament starts here in Corpus Christi on Friday, March 23rd. Sites for play will include HEB Tennis Center, Al Kruse Tennis Center and Corpus Christi Country Club. With nearly 500 entries, there will be lots of great tennis to enjoy this weekend. Participants from around the state will be seeking ranking points and each match will be hard-fought. Come on out and see some great tennis!

USTA Mobile SmashZone to be at Kingsville Air Show April 14-15

The USTA announced that SmashZone, the premiere fan interactive attraction at the US Openwas a huge success at the Wings Over South Texas Air Show at the Naval Air Station – Kingsville on April 14th & 15th!

Many thanks to the CCTA volunteers who showed up in force to help with the event. 2012 Stripes Grand Prix Circuit Kicks Off March 16th

Al Kruse Tennis Center will host the first 2012 Stripes Grand Prix Event the weekend of March 16th-18th. The South Texas Professional Tennis Association (STPTA) and the CCTA are once again very grateful to Stripes for their generous donation to help fund this series. These local tournaments offer our junior players the chance to play some excellent competitive tennis without the expense of traveling to larger cities. Age levels from 10 to 18 are offered and doubles are offered in the 14 and Under and 18 and Under divisions. The series consists of 8 events, with one tournament in each of March, April and May and two events in each of June and July. The series culminates with the City Championships in August. The top 8 players in each division will be invited to the Grand Prix Invitational Shoot-Out Tournament October 19-21.
The top two singles points winners from each division will also be eligible to represent Corpus Christi at the USPTA Junior Grand Prix Championships at John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch on September 28-30. Be sure to check the local standings throughout the year on this website.

March 16th Deadline to Sign Up for USTA Jr Team Tennis

Fall 2011 Sectional JTT Champs

USTA Jr Team Tennis Spring Season is underway around the area! Jr Team Tennis is a fun and exciting way for junior players to experience the fun of tennis in a team atmosphere. The league is designed to offer a venue for all levels of participants to compete against comparable level players. Age divisions include 10 and Under, 12 and Under, 14 and Under, and 18 and Under. Each division has beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, with all Championship and Super Championship qualified players required to play in the advanced level. All ages over 10 years old have the opportunity to winner their division and advance to sectional championships at John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels or McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio, where they will play teams from around the state for a chance to play in the national championships.
Each player must be a junior member of the USTA and the cost of the local league is only $38 for the season. The deadline for entering as an individual player who wishes to be placed on a team is March 16th. For more information, call 361-816-1378.

CCTA Scholarship Deadline April 29th

The CCTA annually awards four $1000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors who have been involved in tennis. The deadline to apply this year is April 29th. More information is available on the CCTA Scholarship page under “What We Do.” All high school tennis coaches and counselors should have this information, but if you know someone who wishes to apply, you may contact the CCTA at 361-888-4782 to get an application form. We love to honor our dedicated junior players, so help us get the word out!
