DOUBLE UP TOURNEY THIS COMING SUNDAY, MAY 19TH!

Looking for a fun Sunday afternoon with some good friends, great food and competitive tennis? Sign up for the Annual Double -Up Tournament! We will be at HEB Tennis Center from 1pm to 6 pm Sunday afternoon. The first 16 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams that sign up will play 16 game rounds against other teams in their flight. The tennis will be great, but we are also having a great meal catered by Marco’s and some fun prizes.

This is one of the annual CCTA fundraisers so all of the proceeds go to our tennis programming around the Coastal Bend from scholarships to Junior Team Tennis to tournaments and leagues. Come out and support tennis in our area and have a great time doing it. Entry fee is $40 per person. Drop off your entry at HEB, call 361-888-4782 and leave a message or email penny@cctaonline.org. Remember there are limited spaces and they are filling up in a hurry!

SIGN UP IS OPEN FOR 2013 TAAF REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

The 2013 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Regional Tennis Tournament will be held at Al Kruse Tennis Center in Corpus Christi. This event is a regional qualifier for the State Tournament, which will also be played in Corpus Christi on July 26-28th, 2013. This is a great opportunity for some fun tennis, so be sure to get signed up!

Play in the junior division will begin at 5 pm on Wednesday, May 29th and will continue in the evenings through Friday, May 31st. The division will complete that night to avoid any conflict with the Corpus Christi ZAT Tournament. Singles and doubles will be offered in Boys and Girls 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 and Under. Mixed doubles will be offered in 14, 16, and 18 under only. Players may play two events in one age group. The top 6 singles finishers and the top 3 doubles and mixed doubles teams will be eligible to advance to the State Tournament.

The Adult division will begin at 8:00 am on Saturday, June 1st and continue through the 2nd. Men and Women’s singles and doubles divisions will be available in the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and Open levels. Mixed doubles will be offered in the 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and 9.5 levels. Players may participate in two events of the same level. ALL Adults playing in the Regional Tournament will be eligible to play in the State Tournament.

Fees are $20 for the first event and $15 for the second event. Checks and cash are accepted. Checks should be made to Seagull Sports. Mail or bring entries to Al Kruse Tennis Center, Attn: Susan Torrance, 502 King Street, Corpus Christi, TX 78401.

The deadline for the junior division is Monday, May 27th by 8:00 pm. The deadline for adults is Wednesday, May 29th at 7:00 pm. Call 883-6942 for match times.

10 & Under Jr. Team Tennis Regional to be held in Corpus Christi May 4th

May 4th will be a great day for all 10 & Under kids who want to play some team tennis! The CCTA has been granted the opportunity to host a Regional event for 10 and Under players throughout the state in a Jr. Team Tennis format. The event is one day only, from 10 a.m. until approximately 4 PM. No one will be eliminated and everyone will get plenty of tennis. We will have a division for the red ball players, the orange ball players and the green dot players.

Cinco De Mayo will be the theme for the day and we will celebrate with great snacks, prizes and piñatas. Lunch will be provided by USTA Texas.

Teams should have between 4 and 10 kids on them and there is no requirement for a certain number of boys or girls. If you are an individual player without a team, be sure to sign up too and we’ll put you on a team with players of your ability level. The cost is only $10 per player and everyone is sure to have a great time! See you there.

Register for Spring Kids Clubs!

The CCTA is excited about hosting 5 Kids Club locations this spring and the action starts in early April! Our Kids Clubs are the perfect opportunity for beginning or inexperienced players to try out tennis or learn a little more about the game. We have a great group of tennis professionals who have agreed to coordinate these programs for us at various sites around the city. Each program welcomes children 5 to 11 years of age. We use the 10 and under format for instruction with age-appropriate racquets, courts and balls so kids can work on proper technique and strokes. The goals of the program vary with the age of the child. Five to six year olds will focus on simple tasks with coordination, movement and hand-eye coordination with the racquet. Seven to eight year olds will work more on the fundamentals of the beginning strokes still with emphasis on learning some basic racquet skills. The nine through eleven year old group will have more work on actual stroke production and play across the net. Regardless of the age group, we emphasize group games and activities that keep all of the kids involved all of the time. The cost for the entire session is $35 per child and once again this season, we are pleased to offer a free junior racquet with each sign up. We will collect cash or check on the first day of each program at that site, but we need to you sign up here so we can properly plan for the number of kids planning on coming. Gerry Maingot Honored at USTA/USPTA Annual Meeting

Gerry Maingot, Director of Tennis and Swim at Corpus Christi Country Club, was honored at the USTA/USPTA Annual Meeting February 15-17 in Dallas. Gerry received the Industry Excellence Award from the USPTA as the tennis professional who most contributed to grassroots programs and an increase in participation in the sport over the past year.

Gerry works tirelessly here in Corpus Christi to provide opportunities for all to enjoy tennis. Besides his daily duties at the Corpus Christi Country Club, he serves on the CCTA Board of Directors, is league coordinator for all of our biggest leagues, participates and supports all of our 10 and under programs, and serves as a site director for all of our tournaments. On the USTA Texas sectional level, he is the new committee chair for the Leagues committee, serves on the Jr Team Tennis Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee.

Congratulations, Gerry and thanks for all you do. It is a well-deserved honor!

Support the Islanders Men’s and Women’s Teams!

Come out and enjoy some great collegiate tennis and support our Islanders! The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders women’s tennis team remains undefeated for the spring season at 5-0 after a win over University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The men’s team is 1-4 for the spring with some hard-fought losses against some tough opponents.

The next home matches will be February 22nd at 2 pm for the women’s team and the men will host the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions beginning March 1st with a great lineup of opponents. Matches are played at the Thomas J Henry Islander Tennis Facility just off Ennis-Joslin on Nile.

These teams put in an unbelievable amount of work to compete at this level and these student-athletes are really an outstanding group. Bring the whole family out and cheer for our Islanders!

18 and over Adult Leagues Open for Registration

Time to get your Adult Spring league team organized and registered! Registration for the 18 and over league is open and the deadline for registration will be March 6th. Contact the Corpus Christi Country Club pro shop for a team number (361-991-7561). The captains’ meeting will be held above the pro shop at 7 pm on March 14th and league play will begin the week of March 18th. Levels from 2.5 through 4.5 will be offered.

The 40′s men’s and women’s leagues have had a great turnout and are finishing up. The 40′s mixed doubles leagues also continue play. Good luck to all the teams!

Tennis Umpire and Referees School Scheduled March 9th

The CCTA will host our annual officials school on Saturday, March 9th. All current officials and new official candidates will need to plan to attend. We will have a great instructor, Stephanie Burnam, who has played and coached tennis at many levels in Texas and is an experienced official. This is a great way to learn the rules, give back to the tennis community and supplement your income. We will provide you with most of the items needed to get started–just come willing to learn and work!

USTA LEAGUE RESTRUCTURED FOR 2013

USTA Texas has restructured the adult leagues for 2013 to provide more opportunities for league play. The league names will now reflect the age as well as the level of the players. Adult 18 and over equates to the prior regular adult league, with levels from 2.5 through Open offered. The Adult 40 and over League which Corpus Christi has been a trial site for will now be an official league. Any adult who will be 40 (or older) during 2013 will be eligible; levels offered will be 3.0 through 4.5.
